Cover: In the C. elegans embryo, centrosome duplication is required for bipolar spindle formation and normal cell division. In the article by Medley et al. page 17, the authors report that Casein Kinase II (CK2) acts as a negative regulator of centrosome duplication through a genetic interaction with zyg-1. The image illustrates that the zyg-1(it25) mutant C. elegans embryo exhibits monopolar spindles at the second mitosis, which results from a failure of centrosome duplication during the first cell cycle. The embryo is stained for centrioles (SAS-4: green), microtubules (red), and DNA (blue). Image created by Mi Hye Song and licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence.

First person interviews — Kim, Isabel and Antonio

Kim, Isabel and Antonio

In the latest interviews with early-career authors of our papers, Antonio Barral, Isabel Rollan and Kim Nguyen discuss their scientific backgrounds, research and future directions.

Review Commons launches

We're excited to be an affiliate journal for Review Commons, the ASAPbio/EMBO platform for high-quality journal-independent peer-review in the life sciences, which went live on 09 December.

Cover article — Molecular profiling of stem cell-like female germ line cells in Drosophila delineates networks important for stemness and differentiation

On the cover of issue 11, Tawari, Wodarz et al. identify CG4038 as a gene downregulated in bam mutant ovaries in an RNA-seq transcriptome analysis.

Dates for 2020 — Grants, Meetings and Workshops

Get ahead and update your 2020 diary with our meeting grant deadlines! The Company of Biologists also has a fantastic line-up of Workshops with funded places for early-career researchers and larger Journal Meetings from our sister journals Development, Journal of Cell Science, Journal of Experimental Biology and Disease, Models & Mechanisms.

Why publish with BiO?

Biology Open aims to provide rapid publication for scientifically sound observations and valid conclusions in developmental, cell, experimental and translational biology. Submit your paper for an easy and fast publication process. Recent highlights in BiO by Maldonado, Morillo-Velarde et al. discuss Octopus insularis as a new marine model for evolutionary developmental biology.
