Cell-autonomous role of GFRα1 in the development of olfactory bulb GABAergic interneurons
Sabrina Zechel, Diana Fernandez-Suarez, Carlos F. Ibáñez
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio033753 doi: 10.1242/bio.033753 Published 18 May 2018

Summary: Our data indicate that GFRα1 functions cell-autonomously in subpopulations of OB interneuron precursors to regulate their generation and allocation in the mammalian OB.

Functional comparison of distinct Brachyury+ states in a renal differentiation assay
Jing Zhou, Antonius Plagge, Patricia Murray
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio031799 doi: 10.1242/bio.031799 Published 17 May 2018

Summary: Brachyury-expressing mesoderm populations were generated from an E2-Crimson-expressing mESC reporter line using 3-D and 2-D culture systems and their differentiation potential was assessed following incorporation into mouse kidney rudiments.

Fish learn collectively, but groups with differing personalities are slower to decide and more likely to split
Kyriacos Kareklas, Robert W. Elwood, Richard A. Holland
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio033613 doi: 10.1242/bio.033613 Published 16 May 2018

Summary: Zebrafish groups were trained to make collective decisions and memorised locations by using cues. However, collective decisions were made slower by the splitting of groups comprising individuals of dissimilar personality.

1α,25(OH)2D3-glycosides from Solanum glaucophyllum leaves extract induce myoblasts differentiation through p38 MAPK and AKT activation
Ana Paula Irazoqui, Pablo De Genaro, Claudia Buitrago, Heinrich Bachmann, Verónica González-Pardo, Ana Russo de Boland
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio033670 doi: 10.1242/bio.033670 Published 14 May 2018

Summary: Solanum glaucophyllum leaf extract (SGE) contains 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3-glycosides that promotes myoblast fusion through AKT and p38 MAPK pathways. Moreover, SGE regulates the expression of myoD1, myogenin and MCH2b at the beginning of differentiation.

Osteoblast differentiation of equine induced pluripotent stem cells
Arabella Baird, Timothy Lindsay, Alice Everett, Valentine Iyemere, Yasmin Z. Paterson, Alyce McClellan, Frances M. D. Henson, Deborah J. Guest
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio033514 doi: 10.1242/bio.033514 Published 10 May 2018

Summary: Horse iPSCs can be turned directly into bone forming cells but the efficiency is affected by the donor horse. Less variability is observed using different iPSC lines derived from the same horse.

KDM5B decommissions the H3K4 methylation landscape of self-renewal genes during trophoblast stem cell differentiation
    Jian Xu, Benjamin L. Kidder
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio031245 doi: 10.1242/bio.031245 Published 10 May 2018

Summary: The histone 3 lysine 4 demethylase KDM5B plays a key role in regulating H3K4 methylation during trophoblast stem cell self-renewal and differentiation. KDM5B regulates the transcriptional profile of TS cells during self-renewal and differentiation, and resets the H3K4 methylation landscape during differentiation by removing H3K4me3 from promoters of self-renewal and TS cell enriched genes.

Feeder-free differentiation of cells exhibiting characteristics of corneal endothelium from human induced pluripotent stem cells
Michael D. Wagoner, Laura R. Bohrer, Benjamin T. Aldrich, Mark A. Greiner, Robert F. Mullins, Kristan S. Worthington, Budd A. Tucker, Luke A. Wiley
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio032102 doi: 10.1242/bio.032102 Published 8 May 2018

Summary: This study demonstrates differentiation of adult dermal fibroblast-derived iPSCs into neural crest and corneal endothelial-like cells, which could be a valuable tool for investigating the mechanisms of cornea endothelial disease.

Tbx6 controls left-right asymmetry through regulation of Gdf1
Daniel Concepcion, Hiroshi Hamada, Virginia E. Papaioannou
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio032565 doi: 10.1242/bio.032565 Published 4 May 2018

Summary: Tbx6 affects morphology of the cilia of the node, but a leftward nodal flow is still generated. Downstream of nodal flow, Tbx6 regulates the Nodal coligand Gdf1 leading to disruption of left/right axis determination.

Robust interaction of IFT70 with IFT52–IFT88 in the IFT-B complex is required for ciliogenesis
Ryota Takei, Yohei Katoh, Kazuhisa Nakayama
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio033241 doi: 10.1242/bio.033241 Published 30 April 2018

Summary: IFT70 is a subunit of the IFT-B complex involved in anterograde trafficking of ciliary proteins, including tubulins. IFT70-knockout cells failed to form cilia, indicating its essential role in tubulin trafficking.

Tolerance to paternal genotoxic damage promotes survival during embryo development in zebrafish (Danio rerio)
Cristina Fernández-Díez, Silvia González-Rojo, Marta Lombó, M. Paz Herráez
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio030130 doi: 10.1242/bio.030130 Published 30 April 2018

Summary: In fish embryos, genomic instability generated by fertilization with DNA damaged sperm activates mechanisms of DNA damage tolerance, which seems to be mediated by Δ113p53 expression, promoting survival.
