Tubulin-binding cofactor E-like (TBCEL), the protein product of the mulet gene, is required in the germline for the regulation of inter-flagellar microtubule dynamics during spermatid individualization
James J. Fabrizio, Janet Rollins, Christopher W. Bazinet, Stephanie Wegener, Iryna Koziy, Rachel Daniel, Vincent Lombardo, Dwaine Pryce, Kavita Bharrat, Elissa Innabi, Marielle Villanobos, Gabriela Mendoza, Elisa Ferrara, Stephanie Rodway, Matthew Vicioso, Victoria Siracusa, Erin Dailey, Justin Pronovost, Simon Innabi, Vrutant Patel, Nicole DeSouza, Danielle Quaranto, Amir Niknejad
    Biology Open 2020 9: bio049080 doi: 10.1242/bio.049080 Published 26 February 2020

Summary: The leading cause of human male infertility is a failure to resolve spermatids from a germline syncytium during spermatid individualization. Here we characterize a mutation that disrupts this process.

Heart rate and cardiac response to exercise during voluntary dives in captive sea turtles (Cheloniidae)
Junichi Okuyama, Maika Shiozawa, Daisuke Shiode
    Biology Open 2020 9: bio049247 doi: 10.1242/bio.049247 Published 25 February 2020

Summary: Green turtles showed immediate cardiac response to exercise during submergence, presumably because they store oxygen primarily in the lungs and need blood circulation to meet the metabolic demand.

TRBP–Dicer interaction may enhance HIV-1 TAR RNA translation via TAR RNA processing, repressing host-cell apoptosis
Chiaki Komori, Tomoko Takahashi, Yuko Nakano, Kumiko Ui-Tei
    Biology Open 2020 9: bio050435 doi: 10.1242/bio.050435 Published 25 February 2020

Summary: HIV-1 RNA translation may be enhanced through TAR RNA processing by TRBP in collaboration with Dicer, repressing host–cell apoptosis.

Whole-genome fingerprint of the DNA methylome during chemically induced differentiation of the human AML cell line HL-60/S4
Enoch B. Antwi, Ada Olins, Vladimir B. Teif, Matthias Bieg, Tobias Bauer, Zuguang Gu, Benedikt Brors, Roland Eils, Donald Olins, Naveed Ishaque

Loss of Crb2b-lf leads to anterior segment defects in old zebrafish
Satu Kujawski, Cátia Crespo, Marta Luz, Michaela Yuan, Sylke Winkler, Elisabeth Knust
    Biology Open 2020 9: bio047555 doi: 10.1242/bio.047555 Published 11 February 2020

Summary: Loss of the apico-basal polarity regulator Crb2b-lf does not affect retinal development but leads to ocular anterior segment defects in old zebrafish.

The absence of SOX2 in the anterior foregut alters the esophagus into trachea and bronchi in both epithelial and mesenchymal components
Machiko Teramoto, Ryo Sugawara, Katsura Minegishi, Masanori Uchikawa, Tatsuya Takemoto, Atsushi Kuroiwa, Yasuo Ishii, Hisato Kondoh
    Biology Open 2020 9: bio048728 doi: 10.1242/bio.048728 Published 7 February 2020

Summary: In response to the change in the epithelial characteristics from esophagus to trachea/bronchus that happens when SOX2 is inactivated, surrounding mesenchymal tissues also change their characteristics accordingly at all axial levels.

Biology Open and COVID-19

We are aware that the COVID-19 pandemic is having an unprecedented impact on researchers worldwide. The Editors of all The Company of Biologists’ journals have been considering ways in which we can alleviate concerns that members of our community may have around publishing activities during this time. Read about the actions we are taking at this time.

Please don’t hesitate to contact the Editorial Office if you have any questions or concerns.

New funding scheme supports sustainable events

As part of our Sustainable Conferencing Initiative, we are pleased to announce funding for organisers that seek to reduce the environmental footprint of their event. The next deadline to apply for a Scientific Meeting grant is 26 March 2021.

Future Leader Review – early neurodegeneration of Alzheimer’s disease

A new Future Leader Review from Olayemi Olajide, Marcus Suvanto and Clifton Andrew Chapman evaluates the molecular mechanisms that may explain the vulnerability and susceptibility of the entorhinal cortex to early neurodegeneration during the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease.

Find out more about our Future Leader Reviews – they are an exclusive opportunity for early-career researchers who want to establish themselves in their field.

First author interviews

Catch up on our latest first author interviews to go behind the scenes of our latest research, find out more about the authors and hear from early-career researchers themselves how they’re finding life at the bench.
