  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Tetraspanin18 regulates angiogenesis through VEGFR2 and Notch pathways
Grace X. Li, Shaobing Zhang, Ren Liu, Bani Singh, Sukhmani Singh, David I. Quinn, Gage Crump, Parkash S. Gill
    Biology Open 2021 10: bio050096 doi: 10.1242/bio.050096 Published 25 February 2021

Summary: Tspan18 is a transmembrane protein with highly restricted expression in endothelial cells and a critical regulator of VEGF and Notch pathways. It regulates artery–vein specification, vessel patterning and vessel stability.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
A new rat model of treatment-naive quiescent choroidal neovascularization induced by human VEGF165 overexpression
Shan Liu, Antje K. Biesemeier, Alexander V. Tschulakow, Harsh V. Thakkar, Sylvie Julien-Schraermeyer, Ulrich Schraermeyer
    Biology Open 2020 9: bio048736 doi: 10.1242/bio.048736 Published 11 June 2020

Summary: We developed a new treatment-naive quiescent rat choroidal neovascularization model by VEGF overexpression, allowing the long-term investigation of new drugs.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Krüppel-like factor 6 mediates pulmonary angiogenesis in rat experimental hepatopulmonary syndrome and is aggravated by bone morphogenetic protein 9
Yihui Yang, Hongfu Yu, Congwen Yang, Yunfei Zhang, Xiangfa Ai, Xiaobo Wang, Kaizhi Lu, Bin Yi
    Biology Open 2019 8: bio040121 doi: 10.1242/bio.040121 Published 26 June 2019

Summary: Krüppel-like factor 6, which is triggered by pulmonary injury and promoted by bone morphogenetic protein 9, mediates pulmonary angiogenesis in rat experimental hepatopulmonary syndrome and then aggravates lung dysfunction.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Tpl2 is required for VEGF-A-stimulated signal transduction and endothelial cell function
Gareth W. Fearnley, Izma Abdul-Zani, Antony M. Latham, Monica C. Hollstein, John E. Ladbury, Stephen B. Wheatcroft, Adam F. Odell, Sreenivasan Ponnambalam
    Biology Open 2019 8: bio034215 doi: 10.1242/bio.034215 Published 17 May 2019

Summary: Our study shows that the growth factor VEGF-A stimulates synthesis in endothelial cells of a proto-oncoprotein and protein kinase, Tpl2, and this is required for signal transduction and angiogenesis.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Quantitative proteomic profiling of tumor-associated vascular endothelial cells in colorectal cancer
Guoqiang Wang, Qiongzhi Yang, Maoyu Li, Ye Zhang, Yuxiang Cai, Xujun Liang, Ying Fu, Zhefeng Xiao, Minze Zhou, Zhongpeng Xie, Huichao Huang, Yahui Huang, Yongheng Chen, Qiongqiong He, Fang Peng, Zhuchu Chen
    Biology Open 2019 8: bio042838 doi: 10.1242/bio.042838 Published 13 May 2019

Summary: We provided large-scale proteomic profiling of vascular endothelial cells in colorectal cancer with quantitative information, a number of potential antiangiogenic targets and a novel vision in the angiogenesis bio-mechanism of CRC.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Prostaglandin E2 promotes embryonic vascular development and maturation in zebrafish
Kingsley Chukwunonso Ugwuagbo, Sujit Maiti, Ahmed Omar, Stephanie Hunter, Braydon Nault, Caleb Northam, Mousumi Majumder
    Biology Open 2019 8: bio039768 doi: 10.1242/bio.039768 Published 18 April 2019

Summary: Overproduction of PGE2 causes inflammation and cancer and its blockage results in serious physiological consequences. This study investigated the novel roles of PGE2 in early vascular development of zebrafish.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Characterization and in ovo vascularization of a 3D-printed hydroxyapatite scaffold with different extracellular matrix coatings under perfusion culture
Floriana Burgio, Natalie Rimmer, Uwe Pieles, Johanna Buschmann, Marina Beaufils-Hugot
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio034488 doi: 10.1242/bio.034488 Published 26 November 2018

Summary: Depending on the culture media, ECM coating of 3D-printed hydroxyapatite evokes different functional vascularization as assessed by CAM assay in ovo. ECM coating enhances vascularization compared to ECM-free hydroxyapatite.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Physiological electric field works via the VEGF receptor to stimulate neovessel formation of vascular endothelial cells in a 3D environment
Yihong Chen, Liyan Ye, Linbo Guan, Ping Fan, Rui Liu, Hao Liu, Jinxin Chen, Yue Zhu, Xing Wei, Yu Liu, Huai Bai
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio035204 doi: 10.1242/bio.035204 Published 19 September 2018

Summary: This study reports the effects of a direct current electrical field on endothelial neovessel formation in 3D culture. Endogenous EFs may promote angiogenesis of endothelial cells by activating the VEGF receptor signaling pathway.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
A novel reporter allele for monitoring Dll4 expression within the embryonic and adult mouse
Alexander M. Herman, Alexander M. Rhyner, W. Patrick Devine, Sean P. Marrelli, Benoit G. Bruneau, Joshua D. Wythe
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio026799 doi: 10.1242/bio.026799 Published 12 March 2018

Summary: We have developed a novel reporter line, free from complicating factors associated with previous alleles, for monitoring Dll4 expression, at a cellular resolution, in the developing and adult mouse.
