Mitochondria

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Characterisation of maturation of photoreceptor cell subtypes during zebrafish retinal development
    Cátia Crespo, Elisabeth Knust
    Biology Open 2018 7: bio036632 doi: 10.1242/bio.036632 Published 31 October 2018

Summary: We characterised subtype-specific growth of the different photoreceptor compartments, organelle distribution and the influence of light on the growth of the apical membrane.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Mitochondrial dynamics and respiration within cells with increased open pore cytoskeletal meshes
David H. Jang, Sarah C. Seeger, Martha E. Grady, Frances S. Shofer, David M. Eckmann
    Biology Open 2017 6: 1831-1839; doi: 10.1242/bio.029009

Summary: We assessed the effect of cytoskeletal inhibitors and the use of a calcium ionophore as an additional stressor on mitochondrial motility and bioenergetic function in fibroblasts and fibrosarcoma cells.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Molecular regulation of high muscle mass in developing Blonde d'Aquitaine cattle foetuses
Isabelle Cassar-Malek, Céline Boby, Brigitte Picard, Antonio Reverter, Nicholas J. Hudson
    Biology Open 2017 6: 1483-1492; doi: 10.1242/bio.024950

Summary: We explored the molecular basis of high muscle mass in Blonde d’Aquitaine cattle, and found that mRNA encoding slow fibres and mitochondrial proteins were downregulated in this breed.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Evidence that differentiation-inducing factor-1 controls chemotaxis and cell differentiation, at least in part, via mitochondria in D. discoideum
Yuzuru Kubohara, Haruhisa Kikuchi, Van Hai Nguyen, Hidekazu Kuwayama, Yoshiteru Oshima
    Biology Open 2017 6: 741-751; doi: 10.1242/bio.021345

Summary: DIF-1 regulates Dictyostelium chemotaxis and differentiation. We synthesized DIF-1-BODIPY, a fluorescent DIF-1 derivative. DIF-1-BODIPY localized to mitochondria, suggesting that DIF-1 functions, at least in part, via mitochondria.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Enhancing NAD+ salvage metabolism is neuroprotective in a PINK1 model of Parkinson's disease
Susann Lehmann, Samantha H. Y. Loh, L. Miguel Martins
    Biology Open 2017 6: 141-147; doi: 10.1242/bio.022186

Summary: Dietary supplementation with an NAD+ salvage metabolite or decreasing Parp activity suppress mitochondrial dysfunction and is neuroprotective in a PINK1 model of Parkinson's disease.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Chicken muscle mitochondrial content appears co-ordinately regulated and is associated with performance phenotypes
Antonio Reverter, Ron Okimoto, Robyn Sapp, Walter G. Bottje, Rachel Hawken, Nicholas J. Hudson
    Biology Open 2017 6: 50-58; doi: 10.1242/bio.022772

Summary: We have detected variation in muscle mitochondrial content across chickens. This variation relates to phenotypes and also indicates coordinate regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis across the musculature.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Hypersalinity drives physiological and morphological changes in Limia perugiae (Poeciliidae)
Pablo F. Weaver, Oscar Tello, Jonathan Krieger, Arlen Marmolejo, Kathleen F. Weaver, Jerome V. Garcia, Alexander Cruz
    Biology Open 2016 5: 1093-1101; doi: 10.1242/bio.017277

Summary: A population of Limia perugiae living in hypersalinity shows modifications to osmoregulatory mechanisms, correlated with changes to body size, morphology of the head, and secondary sex features.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Expression and preliminary characterization of human MICU2
Dan Li, Wenping Wu, Hairun Pei, Qiang Wei, Qingzhan Yang, Jimin Zheng, Zongchao Jia
    Biology Open 2016 5: 962-969; doi: 10.1242/bio.018572

Summary: Ca2+ induces a monomer-dimer switch of MICU2, with the associated conformational change governed by its first EF-hand, but not influenced by the C-helix domain. A disulfide bond and salt bridge each contribute to MICU1-MICU2 heterodimer formation.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Post-hatching development of mitochondrial function, organ mass and metabolic rate in two ectotherms, the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) and the common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina)
Sarah K. G. Sirsat, Tushar S. Sirsat, Edwin R. Price, Edward M. Dzialowski
    Biology Open 2016 5: 443-451; doi: 10.1242/bio.017160

Summary: Unlike endothermic species, there is little change in skeletal and cardiac muscle mitochondrial function from the embryonic stage through the first year of life in ectothermic alligators and snapping turtles.

  • RESEARCH ARTICLE
Clueless is a conserved ribonucleoprotein that binds the ribosome at the mitochondrial outer membrane
    Aditya Sen, Rachel T. Cox
    Biology Open 2016 5: 195-203; doi: 10.1242/bio.015313

Summary: Clueless is a ribonucleoprotein that is crucial for mitochondrial function. Here we show Clueless can bind the ribosome at the mitochondrial outer membrane, suggesting it may play a role in mitochondrial co-translational import.
